You have two different games that play with museum objects and images from books: Donald’s detective puzzle or Dora’s lost data. Pick one and let’s see what happens…
I know some of the items may seem a little tricky, but you might surprise yourself with what you can add – and you can always skip an image if you can’t think of anything to say about it. Check out content already added if you want some ideas. Hint: Donald’s game is a little more challenging than Dora’s but earns you a lot more points per turn.
The whole point of this is to send all the tags and information you’ve created back to the museums, libraries and archives whose objects are contained here (and these games were originally part of a research project) so there are terms and conditions. They’re also summarised at the bottom of each page. Continuing means you’re ok with this. (It also means you’re a lovely person who’ll be helping out, hooray!).
My name is Mia Ridge and I’ve made these cultural heritage collection metadata games. The games were originally developed for museums in 2010/11 for my MSc dissertation project (City University, 2011; this page includes links to various papers, blog posts and my dissertation). The world has moved on and lots of things about these games need tweaking (and they were only ever in beta anyway) – I’d love to hear your ideas, or even enlist you to help! I’d especially love some help with responsive design or drawing new cartoon faces. You can add comments, bug reports or code on metadata-games on github, email me or say hello on twitter (@mia_out).
For the moment, I’m concentrating on my PhD and only get a chance to work on these games at hack days or when I sneak some procrastination time. However, in late December 2013 I was inspired by the British Library’s release of a million images on Flickr Commons so I added those images while updating the site to use a responsive theme (so it’ll work better on tablets etc).
My aim is to end up with a plugin that other people can add to their site to create their own cultural heritage collection metadata games, but in the short term it’s pretty easy to add new objects to this site so drop me a line if you want to add your objects or images to this site.
