Headline: A banned book

Summary: Galileo published the Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems in 1632 during a time in which intellectual thought was constrained by the religious beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church, enforced by the Inquisition. Galileo's dialogue favoured Copernican theory and a non Geocentric model of the solar system, which were opposed to the Church's teaching. Galileo was tried and the book was banned.

  • Help the British Library tag a million images

Some of the million images the British Library have released on Flickr Commons have been added here for you to play with. The tags you add will help people find these historic images.

They have asked people to use these special tags where appropriate: 'map', 'letter'+theletter e.g. LetterA, 'architecture', 'decoration', 'landscape', 'music', 'portrait', 'fashion'. If the image needs rotating, add 'rotatec' or 'rotatecounterc'.
