Headline: ..got the whole world in her hands. - pocket terrestrial and celestial globe.

Summary: A pocket terrestrial and celestial globe sums it up! The globe is painted with a terrestrial map view of the world and the inside of the globe case is painted with a celestial sky view. They were both used as status symbols for gentlemen and as Children's educational toys but lack enough detail to use as a navigational aid. The globe above was produced in 1824 a time of working class immigration from Europe to America, Canada and Australia that coincided with famines in Europe and also an increased knowledge of world geography.

  • Help the British Library tag a million images

Some of the million images the British Library have released on Flickr Commons have been added here for you to play with. The tags you add will help people find these historic images.

They have asked people to use these special tags where appropriate: 'map', 'letter'+theletter e.g. LetterA, 'architecture', 'decoration', 'landscape', 'music', 'portrait', 'fashion'. If the image needs rotating, add 'rotatec' or 'rotatecounterc'.
