Dress accessory, toggle, plum tree and blossoms, pine tree, bamboo, The Three Friends in Winter, deer, crane, wood, China, c. 1700-1940 Polished, wooden, finely carved to form a small relief. It is in a slightly curved cylindrical form and depicts a very detailed scene. This storytelling toggle features an old man with one hand holding a staff. Other details include a deer, a goat, a dog, a long-necked bird within a grove with a flowering plum blossom tree, a pine tree and bamboo. Both bases of the toggle are engraved with a Chinese character, the bottom with 'tai', meaning "very large" and the top with 'fu', meaning "good fortune" and "happiness". Hence, perhaps this toggle also functioned as a seal.
